Christ's Community in College Hill

Christ's Community in College Hill was established in 1974 for the purpose of meeting the needs of the residents in College Hill who felt chained to an environment with no hope. A Christian Community made up of the surrounding churches would reach out to our friends in need through our programs which include: Spiritual Counseling, Emergency Food Pantry, Rent and Utility Assistance, Summer Youth Employment and Day Camp, Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets Distribution, and Santa’s Toy Shop.

Feast of Love

Karen Lane began Feast of Love in 1986 with a vision from God to provide holiday meals for those who were lonely. Those dinners inspired a community. The vision didn’t stop there; Karen continued to find ways to serve God by serving others. She soon started “Find a Need and Fill it” which provides beds and furniture to people trying to rebuild their lives. After that it was “Operation Baby Formula” which has fed and cared for hundreds of area children. Next was “Tools for Schools”. This ministry provides the basic necessary supplies like paper, pencils, glue and more to area schools that are at or below the poverty level. The teachers then distribute the supplies to the children as needed. Karen didn’t stop there; she then started “Camp S’more”, which is an overnight experience for inner city children. The children get an opportunity to fish, go on a nature hike, play games, enjoy songs by a campfire and best of all make and eat s’mores. The last ministry Karen started was “Choices”. This program provides reality based blunt stories of the “poor choices” of other individuals and the devastating results. Young people are shown how to handle issues, as well as gain self-esteem and self-confidence to make good choices.

Karen Lane was an amazing woman with drive and determination. In June of 2012, Karen was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. She continued to run Feast of Love with the same fierce tenacity as before, sometimes from a hospital bed. In October she attended her last Camp S’more. Karen looked each child in the eyes and told them she loved them, and they were worth loving. Due to her illness, Karen was unable to make the Thanksgiving dinner, but made sure everything ran smoothly. Karen went home to the arms of her Lord Jesus on November 29th, 2012. She ran the race that was set before her with gumption and grace, fortitude and forgiveness and most importantly LOVE. Someone said of Karen, “She comforted the afflicted and afflicted the comforted” ... That was Karen.

I met with Karen the day before she died. We had a conversation about naming me “interim Director” so Karen could take the time needed to heal. I would field all the calls; with the understanding Karen was still very much in charge. Little did I know, in less than 24 hours Karen would pass and I would become the Director of Feast of Love. I am humbled to be in this position and excited to see what the future holds for this ministry...
